A few months ago, I was really starting to notice that I was shying away from posting any pictures on my Instagram account that had me showing teeth. I’ve always loved to smile but was embarrassed by the colour of my once pearly-whites. So, I started looking at whitening options.
I knew for sure that I was not going to pick whitening strips because the last time I used those, my gums bled badly and became super sensitive. The dentist was an expensive option and to be honest, I didn’t relish a visit to the dental office. LED Teeth Whitening was an appealing option but I was having a hard time finding the time to make an appointment.
Enter Smile Brilliant. Serendipitously, they sent me an email asking if I’d be interested in trying out their at-home product in exchange for an honest review. The request came at an excellent time and I was eager to get started! Below is a timeline-in-pictures of my experience with the product (spoiler: it was great!) as well as a Q&A that answers a number of follower questions.
A few weeks ago, when I was close to the end of my journey, I posted an Instagram Story teasing this blog post. Clearly, teeth whitening is a hot topic because I received a ton of questions! Here’s a summary of what you wanted to know most…
Did you experience gum burn?
This is by far the most popular question. Yes, I did have some sensitivity and after one application I noticed by gum line was a little white. But definitely nowhere close to what happened with whitening strips! Here are a couple of tips to help prevent the issues, which worked like a charm:
- Rub a little Vaseline or coconut oil along your gum line before applying the whitening gel.
- Do NOT use too much gel! A thin line is all you need and will help prevent excess gel from settling on your gums. I was able to stretch one application stick over four applications.
- Skip a day or two if you need it. It won’t impact the whitening process, I promise!
How long was the process? Aren’t there faster ways to whiten?
This is not meant to be a fast process. From the day the kit first arrived to the point where I was ready to stop took about six weeks. But, because I wasn’t using any extra time and was able to whiten while doing other things, I didn’t feel pressed for time. Summer is a busy season with the kids home from school and trying to balance work, home and chauffeuring duties (#momlife) so I was incredibly grateful that I didn’t have to fit yet another appointment into my already packed calendar.
Could you talk properly with the trays in your mouth?
LOL. A few people noticed this from my Instagram video. No, I didn’t sound exactly like I normally would. There was a slight lisp. Still, no one had any complaints hearing me and even Google Home worked perfectly fine with my voice!
Can you sleep with the trays in place?
That is NOT recommended. Ideally, you should start slowly at 45mins and work your way up to a maximum of 3hrs. Anything more than that could damage your gums and if you’re sleeping, you may not be aware of the sensitivity. I didn’t wear them for longer than 2hrs and even then, only if my gums felt good.
Bottom Line: Do you recommend it?
There are a lot of teeth whitening options currently available on the market and ultimately, you need to pick the right one for you. If you’re looking for a quick fix, this isn’t it. But if you want something that easily fits into your life and busy schedule, this option is awesome. Would I specifically use Smile Brilliant again? That’s an enthusiastic YES! They honestly made the process so easy, had very clear, easy-to-follow instructions and were available to answer all my questions. Overall, it was a great experience.
